A spring tide is a period when the difference between high tide and low tide is greater than usual.
It happens around the full moon and new moon, when the sun, moon, and Earth are more closely aligned. During these phases, the gravitational forces of the sun and moon reinforce one another, creating higher high tides and lower low tides.
Despite the name, spring tides have nothing to do with the season. The word “spring” refers to the way the water rises, or “springs,” more strongly than usual.
Spring tides happen about twice a month, and if you spend enough time near the ocean, you can often see their effect. Beaches narrow, reefs become more exposed, currents shift, and familiar surf spots can feel completely different depending on the tide.
That constant movement is part of what makes the ocean so compelling. It is never entirely still and never exactly the same twice.
Why we called it Spring Tides
When I was choosing a name, I kept coming back to the relationship between the moon and the ocean.
There is something beautiful about the fact that the moon, from so far away, can exert a real and measurable pull on the sea. The tides are constantly responding to that force, moving through cycles of rising, falling, retreating, and returning.
I loved the parallel with womanhood. Women have long been connected symbolically with the moon, cycles, intuition, and the tides.
We move through cycles too. Our energy shifts, our bodies change, and different seasons of life can make us feel more open, more inward, more grounded, or more powerful.
Spring Tides is also about that feeling of being aligned. Aligned with yourself, with where you are in life, and with the natural world around you. It is the feeling I get when I am in the ocean and everything else goes a little quiet.
Spring Tides felt feminine, powerful, a little free-spirited, and deeply connected to the sea. It felt like the right name for a brand built around women and the places where we feel most like ourselves.
